Sizing guide: 1000–2500 for bream, whiting and flathead on light plastics; 3000–4000 for all-round estuary and bay work; 5000–6000 for snapper, salmon and small kings; 8000–14000 for offshore jigging, live-baiting and big kingfish; 18000+ for tuna and marlin. Look for sealed bodies (Shimano X-Protect, Daiwa Magsealed) if you fish the rocks or wash your gear down hard, and a quality carbon drag for anything that runs.
